Adriana Barbosa is a Brazilian entrepreneur and cultural leader known for connecting Black culture with entrepreneurship and economic opportunity. She founded Feira Preta, a platform celebrating Afro-Brazilian culture and enterprise, and leads PretaHub, an organisation that supports Black entrepreneurs and creative innovation.

In 2002, Barbosa established Feira Preta to create a marketplace where Black entrepreneurs could showcase their products, reach new audiences and turn cultural creativity into commercial opportunity. The initiative grew from a small street fair into a major platform for Black culture and entrepreneurship in Latin America, bringing together businesses, artists and creatives.

She expanded this vision through PretaHub, which supports Black entrepreneurs through business development, professional training and networks that can help them grow. Her approach recognises that cultural representation is most effective when communities also have access to the resources and opportunities needed to build sustainable businesses.

Barbosa’s work has received international recognition. She became an Ashoka Fellow in 2018. In 2020, she was named among the Schwab Foundation’s Social Innovators of the Year, in the Social Entrepreneurs category, for her leadership of PretaHub and its work promoting Black entrepreneurship in Brazil.

Barbosa’s significance lies in her focus on the economic value of Black creativity.

Entrepreneurs from marginalised communities can face barriers to finance, business networks and access to customers. Barbosa has worked to address these challenges by creating platforms that help Black business owners gain visibility, build connections and pursue commercial opportunities.

Feira Preta established a public platform for Afro-Brazilian businesses and creative expression. PretaHub broadened that work by supporting entrepreneurship and connecting cultural innovation with business development.

Her contribution demonstrates that representation carries greater impact when people also have opportunities to build businesses, access markets and benefit economically from their work.

Adriana Barbosa’s story illustrates a powerful principle: cultural pride should create opportunities, not stop at visibility.

Through Feira Preta and PretaHub, Barbosa has helped connect Afro-Brazilian cultural expression with entrepreneurship and economic participation. Her work places ownership, access to markets and support for Black-owned businesses at the centre of the conversation about cultural development.

Her experience also offers a valuable perspective on the African diaspora. Brazil has its own history and social realities, while questions of racial equality, representation and economic opportunity resonate across many African-descended communities.

Adriana Barbosa is TCMP Celebrity of the Week for building platforms that connect Afro-Brazilian culture with Black entrepreneurship and economic opportunity.
