Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has built a public profile that extends beyond entertainment and royal life into philanthropy, women’s advocacy and community initiatives. Her relationship with Africa has developed through visits, charitable partnerships and public engagements focused on women, girls, education, health and leadership.

Her engagement with the continent began before her marriage to Prince Harry. In 2016, while serving as a World Vision Canada Global Ambassador, Meghan travelled to Rwanda, where she highlighted the importance of access to clean water and girls’ education. The visit drew attention to the challenges faced by women and girls who often bear a disproportionate burden of collecting water, while also highlighting the connection between access to water and girls’ ability to remain in school.

In 2019, during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tour of Southern Africa, Meghan visited the Justice Desk in Nyanga, Cape Town, an organisation working on children’s rights, safety and female empowerment. She also visited mothers2mothers, an organisation that trains and employs women living with HIV as frontline health workers across several African countries.

Her connection with Africa took another significant step in 2024 when she travelled to Nigeria with Prince Harry. During the visit, The Archewell Foundation hosted a Women in Leadership event in Abuja, bringing together women from media, business, politics and culture for a discussion involving Meghan and Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

The Nigeria engagement also included a visit to Lightway Academy in Abuja, where the couple participated in a mental health summit connected to an expanded partnership between The Archewell Foundation and the GEANCO Foundation.

According to Archewell, its earlier partnership with GEANCO supported 2,500 girls with school supplies and menstrual products in 2023. The expanded partnership focused on menstrual health, mental health resources and health education.

Meghan Markle’s African story is significant because it brings together public visibility, advocacy and engagement with issues affecting women and young people.

Across her documented engagements in Rwanda, South Africa and Nigeria, several themes have remained consistent, including girls’ education, access to clean water, women’s health, menstrual health, mental wellbeing, safety and female leadership.

Her 2024 Nigeria visit was particularly significant within this broader story. The Women in Leadership event placed female representation and leadership at the centre of the conversation, while the Lightway Academy engagement connected education, mental health and youth wellbeing.

Her relationship with Africa therefore extends beyond a single visit or public appearance. Through charitable partnerships and engagements with organisations working on the ground, she has used her international platform to draw attention to causes affecting women, girls and young people.

Meghan Markle’s relationship with Africa offers a distinctive perspective on the influence of celebrity in social advocacy.

Her documented engagements across Rwanda, South Africa and Nigeria show a recurring focus on women, girls, education, health, safety and leadership. From highlighting clean water and girls’ education in Rwanda, to engaging with women’s health and empowerment initiatives in South Africa, and later participating in programmes focused on education, menstrual health, mental health and women’s leadership in Nigeria, her African engagements have consistently intersected with issues affecting women and young people.

For TCMP, Meghan Markle represents the intersection of global visibility and African engagement. Her story demonstrates how a public figure can use an international platform to amplify organisations and causes working within African communities.

It also offers a wider conversation about the role of celebrity in advocacy, particularly when global visibility meets locally led initiatives addressing some of the most important challenges facing women, girls and young people.
